Columbia Montour Quarterly Vol. 2: October-December 2021

All too soon it was time to leave Rock God and go to Old Forge Brewing Company. Although it was the last stop on my River Rat Brew Trail passport adventure, it was by no means least! It was a pleasant late summer evening, and we decided to sit on the outside patio. A great choice. Since we were all hungry at that point, we ordered food. I really enjoyed the “Turkey Jerk” sandwich with its sliced turkey, jerk sauce and cheddar cheese. Two of my friends had the “Forge Burger,” described on the menu as “local Tworkoski beef, sauteed ale onions, hops-infused bbq sauce, peppered bacon and cheddar cheese.” It looked very good, as did the “Nashville Hot Chicken” that my other friend ordered. Old Forge, which opened in 2008, makes a point of using local businesses, including farmers, as its suppliers whenever possible.

or blackened scallops. I chose the chicken and enjoyed every bite. My companion is a big pizza fan andMarzoni’s brick oven pizza called The Butcher, described on the menu as “A meat lover’s dream!” might as well have had his name on it. Tomato sauce, sliced meatball, bacon, ham, sausage, and pepperoni topped with mozzarella cheese made it a dream come true for him. After stuffing our faces we headed over to Pineknotter Brewing Co. in Northumberland. One look at the beer list and my companion immediately chose one named “Life Is Good Today,” I think mostly because that’s the way he feels whenever I announce that it’s time for a brewery trip! It was described as a “Golden ale with a touch of sea salt and lime.” He thoroughly enjoyed it. A big cigar fan, he also liked that Get Lit Cigars from Sunbury was selling cigars in the outdoor plaza across the street that Pineknotter calls “Knottyville.” Pineknotter also had live music the night we were there with Papa Latt playing and singing on the outside patio. Great music! And, if you’re a fan of trivia nights, Pineknotter has one planned Sept. 29 at 7 p.m. Too soon it was time to head home. But the next week I headed out with my friends Susan, Sally and Joanne to the last two breweries in my passport – Rock God and Old Forge, both in Danville. At Rock God, each of my friends chose a flight of beer, which true to the name “Rock God,” was served on a wooden board carved to look like a guitar. And the beers are all named for rock songs. Although Rock God doesn’t serve meals, each of the flights came with several large pretzels. They do have food trucks visiting. With the help of Jenn, our server, Susan chose Everlong IPA, About A Girl, Horse with No Name and Double Vision. Sally had several of those and also Cherry Pie. Joanne tried No Excuses and Shimmer. New on their beer offerings, Shimmer was inspired by Danville-based Bason Coffee Roasting’s lavender coffee. Shimmer had notes of French Lavender as well as lemon from the Belgian yeast. Everlong IPA, No Excuses and About A Girl were their favorites of the evening.
