Knoebels Amusement Resort musement Resort

Welcome to Knoebels Amusement Resort! You may be familiar with the Knoebels that features over 60 rides, award-winning food, its own waterpark, dozens of games and gift shops, hundreds of campsites, a golf course and so much more. But did you know it all started with a swimming hole? Roaring Creek, which still runs through the park today, was a popular summer spot in 1925, the same year Henry Knoebel had an idea that would define family fun for years to come. He began construction, and on July 4, 1926, Henry opened Knoebels as a large swimming pool where the Crystal Pool is today. Within that opening year, he added a restaurant and steam-powered carousel, and Knoebels hasn’t stopped evolving since. The hub for fun, food and fantasy continued to grow into the park people know and love today. For 98 years, Knoebels has been dedicated to its family-friendly beginnings by providing free admission, free parking, free entertainment and free picnic facilities. With rides and games for kids of all ages (and the kids at heart), the Knoebel family will help your family make lasting memories for generations! There’s so much fun to be had that it can’t all be contained to the summer season! Knoebels is open the last weekend in April through the last weekend in September, followed by spooky Hallo-Fun weekends in October and the park’s newest seasonal special through December. Joy Through the Grove, Knoebels drive-through Christmas light experience, is open nightly after Thanksgiving.

2024 TRAVEL GUIDE

5

A destination is only as vibrant as its communities, and Columbia & Montour Counties may be counted as fortunate in that regard. While much of the region is comprised of idyllic river valleys, rolling hills, and rural farmland, as well as parks, forests, and state game lands, the area’s communities are at its heart. In Columbia County, Bloomsburg is the largest, with a population of just over 14,000. It is also home to Commonwealth University of Pennsylvania — Bloomsburg. A unique feature of Bloomsburg is its designation as the only incorporated “town” in Pennsylvania, officially made so by the State General Assembly in 1870. All other communities in the state are designated as cities, boroughs, or townships. A section of downtown Bloomsburg is also a National Historic District, which ensures the preservation of its fine residential architecture. To the east, Berwick has a proud industrial history. For a number of years, the borough was the largest manufacturer of train and subway cars in the eastern United States. In 1904, Berwick’s American Car & Foundry Company produced the world’s first all-steel passenger car. In later years, the plant churned out over 15,000 tanks for World War II. During the war, the borough was the top tank-producer in the nation. In neighboring Montour County, Danville’s history includes a documented role in the westward expansion of America via the growth of the railroad industry. In the 1800s, Danville forged a reputation as an iron-making center, creating, and manufacturing the railroad industry’s first iron T-rail. Today, visitors will enjoy exploring downtown Danville and strolling the length of the community’s historic Mill Street. A walk through the streets of Danville is a study of 19th century architecture: Federal, Second Empire, Italianate, Colonial, Classic Revival, Victorian, and Queen Anne. Bloomsburg, Berwick, and Danville are all located on the banks of the Susquehanna River, making them picturesque destinations for seasonal travelers. In addition to these three waterfront communities, the counties are also home to many other small boroughs and villages, nestled in the surrounding rural countryside. Finding and exploring hidden gems like Benton, Catawissa,

Elysburg, Millville, and Washingtonville will keep travelers busy. The rich histories of each community in Columbia & Montour Counties provide plenty of reasons to spend an extra day or two in the region. Begin planning your visit today!

Esther Furnace Covered Bridge Photo by Jimmy Tighe Photography

However, with every passing year, these simple wooden structures have grown to epitomize the peace and beauty of rural life. A covered bridge today is a reminder of the craftsmanship of our ancestors, and of life without all of the hustle and bustle of the modern world. For adults who recall days spent playing or fishing in the streams beneath the bright red spans, these bridges symbolize the nostalgia of childhood. Columbia & Montour Counties have 25 of Pennsylvania’s remaining covered bridges, and are the perfect destination for seeing these American treasures in person. A highlight is seeing the East & West Paden Bridges, known as "The Twin Bridges" for their conjoined spans. The Twins are one of only two sets of such bridges in the country. The oldest covered bridge in the counties, the Wanich Bridge, dates to 1844. Of the 25 bridges, 20 still allow for vehicular traffic. Four of the remaining five have picnic tables on them to allow for a relaxing lunch visit. Each season brings a new view of the bridges, so travelers may elect to see them at any point throughout the year. To help guide your visit, a free printed driving tour map of the bridges can be requested from the Visitors Bureau's website.

As one of the most iconic sights in the Central Pennsylvania countryside, covered bridges are a reminder of simpler times of days gone by. Pennsylvania has nearly 200 covered bridges still standing – the most in the United States. Covered bridges were created for a variety of reasons, but most related to the longevity of the bridge. Simply put, building a roof over the bridge would lengthen its lifespan by slowing the impact of wear and tear from weather and wood rot.

Manley Robbins Trail at the Hess Recreation Area in Danville is the oldest known rail-to-trail in the United States and provides a scenic walk or bike. In the southern part of Columbia County, Weiser State Forest – Roaring Creek Tract offers the area’s largest trail system, including an eight mile shared use trail that is ideal for families out for a casual weekend jaunt. Weiser is also home to four historic miner trails from the 19th century that were restored in the early 2000’s to allow for present-day explorers to “walk in the footsteps” of miners from days past. In total, there are approximately 40 miles of shared use trails for hiking, mountain biking, and cross-country skiing at the Roaring Creek Tract. Further east at the Susquehanna Riverlands near Berwick, hikers and bicyclists can traverse the 12.5 mile Susquehanna Warrior Trail that retraces an old Native American footpath along the mighty Susquehanna River. Ice climbing on the Falls Trail is even permitted with special approval during the winter months! A wide range of family-friendly attractions, craft breweries, wineries, antique shops, good food, and comfy lodging can be found near these great hiking locations. Adding a few trails to a long weekend or week stay will surely lead to fond memories from an adventurous vacation, so begin planning your trip to the area today!

2024 TRAVEL GUIDE 25

Columbia & Montour Counties are home to some fantastic mountain biking options. In Montour County, Danville leads the way with more than 32 miles of mountain biking trail options, spread between the Geisinger Stewardship Forest, Hopewell Park, and Hess Recreation Area. With 11+ miles of established trails, Geisinger Hospital’s Stewardship Forest trail network is a popular destination for seasoned mountain bikers. Many of the trails are challenging, but rewarding. All are named using various medical terms, including Punctured Lung, Broken Clavicle, Life Flight, and Concussion. Sweeping views of downtown Danville, the Susquehanna River, and the surrounding countryside are an added bonus for trail users. Located just down the road from the Stewardship Forest, Hopewell Park was Montour County’s first purpose-built mountain bike trail network. Built by mountain bikers for mountain bikers, the Hopewell Park / Danville Borough Farm Trail network is designed to challenge experienced riders while still allowing beginners to enjoy a great day on the trail. Trail creators made use of the natural terrain, but added enough twists and turns to keep visitors coming back for more. In southern Columbia County, the Weiser State Forest – Roaring Creek Tract boasts 64 miles of shared-use trails and forest roads that are available for mountain biking. For cyclists searching for a relatively flat ride, an 8-mile, shared-use trail runs the length of the valley on the Roaring Creek Tract. This trail offers a leisurely trip through the scenic valley and runs alongside a creek and three reservoirs.

When summer rolls around, it’s time to hit the water! Columbia & Montour Counties benefit from the Susquehanna River, which flows through the counties on its way to the Chesapeake Bay. This makes the area a prime kayaking destination. With ample boat launches and several nearby outfitters, it’s quite simple for anyone to enjoy some river time. Wildlife is abundant on the river - don’t be surprised if you take a paddle break and see a bald eagle soaring overhead. In addition to the river, there are several navigable creeks and streams throughout the counties. If you’ve got the proper licenses, you could even try some kayak fishing. Want a more relaxed paddle? Try one of the area lakes, where you won’t have to worry about coordinating a boat shuttle at the end of your paddle. Both Lake Chillisquaque at the Montour Preserve and Lake Jean at Ricketts Glen State Park offer seasonal kayak rentals, perfect for families looking for an easy option to get right on the water. Don’t have your own kayaks? Coordinate with one of the area’s outfitters to get set up with rental boats and assistance with launching. Never kayaked before? Be sure to read up on kayaking safety tips and procedures to make sure you have a safe journey: itourcolumbiamontour.com/timetokayak. When you’re ready to get paddling, be sure to request a free copy of the Susquehanna River Paddling Guide, which features various river itineraries. Find it at iTourColumbiaMontour.com under the “Request a Brochure” tab.

FARM MARKETS

WINE & Spirits

When it comes to food, there’s nothing better than knowing exactly where it came from. Visiting an area farm market or farm stand will allow you to explore the beauty and bounty of the region while learning about your food’s path from the farm to your plate!

If it’s wine you’re looking for, you’ll certainly find it here. While visiting the counties, plan to include stops along the way at a few of the area’s wineries. Odds are that you’ll probably find a few new favorites to take home! Throughout the year, the wineries also host several specialty trail events with seasonal pairings and chances to win wine-themed prize baskets.
