In Columbia County, Bloomsburg is the largest, with a population of just over 14,000. It is also home to Commonwealth University of Pennsylvania — Bloomsburg. A unique feature of Bloomsburg is its designation as the only incorporated

“town” in Pennsylvania, officially made so by the State General Assembly in 1870. All other communities in the state are designated as cities, boroughs, or townships. A section of downtown Bloomsburg is also a National Historic District, which ensures the preservation of its fine residential architecture. To the east, Berwick has a proud industrial history. For a number of years, the borough was the

A destination is only as vibrant as its communities, and Columbia & Montour Counties may be counted as fortunate in that regard. While much of the region is comprised of idyllic river valleys, rolling hills, and rural farmland, as well as parks, forests, and state game lands, the area’s communities are at its heart.

largest manufacturer of train and subway cars in the eastern United States. In 1904, Berwick’s American Car & Foundry Company produced the world’s first all-steel passenger car. In later years, the plant churned out over 15,000 tanks for World War II. During the war, the borough was the top tank-producer in the nation. In neighboring Montour County, Danville’s history includes a documented role in the westward expansion of America via the growth of the railroad industry. In the 1800s, Danville forged a reputation as an iron-making center, creating, and manufacturing the railroad industry’s first iron T-rail. Today, visitors will enjoy exploring downtown Danville and strolling the length of the community’s historic Mill Street. A walk through the streets of Danville is a study of 19th century architecture: Federal, Second

Empire, Italianate, Colonial, Classic Revival, Victorian, and Queen Anne. Bloomsburg, Berwick, and Danville are all located on the banks of the Susquehanna River, making them picturesque destinations for seasonal travelers. In addition to these three waterfront communities, the counties are also home to many other small boroughs and villages, nestled in the surrounding rural countryside.

Finding and exploring hidden gems like Benton, Catawissa, Elysburg, Millville, and Washingtonville will keep travelers busy. The rich histories of each community in Columbia & Montour Counties provide plenty of reasons to spend an extra day or two in the region. Begin planning your visit today!

The peace and tranquility of a vacation spent stream-side just can’t be beat, especially for angling enthusiasts. Envision casting your line and waiting for that monster fish to strike while you take in the picturesque surroundings. In Columbia & Montour Counties, you’ll find no shortage of fishing hot-spots and scenic surroundings. The north branch of the mighty Susquehanna River, the East Coast’s longest river, flows directly through both counties. For those enjoying its resources, it provides one of the best outlets for outdoor recreation in Pennsylvania. The Susquehanna, and other creeks and lakes in the counties, are home to Trout, Smallmouth Bass, Northern Pike, Largemouth Bass, Channel and Bullhead Catfish, Bluegill, Yellow Perch, Walleye, Carp, Pan Fish, Crappie, and Tiger Muskellunge. Fishing Creek runs north-south through Columbia County and is considered to be one of the finest trout streams in Pennsylvania. For those looking to navigate still waters, Lake Chillisquaque, Lake Jean, and Briar Creek Lake are three area lakes where anglers can test their luck. And for fishing enthusiasts, our area features a special Master Angler Passport program, now in its second year. The program encourages anglers to catch, photograph, and release various species of fish in our counties to receive credit and have a chance to win prizes at the end of the year. Each Unique species caught will provide one point throughout the year. To learn more about the 2026 Master Angler Program, please visit: heartofpa.com/master-angler-passport or scan the QR code!

Johnson Bridge Photo by Ben Prepelka

However, with every passing year, these simple wooden structures have grown to epitomize the peace and beauty of rural life. A covered bridge today is a reminder of the craftsmanship of our ancestors, and of life without all of the hustle and bustle of the modern world. For adults who recall days spent playing or fishing in the streams beneath the bright red spans, these bridges symbolize the nostalgia of childhood. Columbia & Montour Counties have 25 of Pennsylvania’s remaining covered bridges, and are the perfect destination for seeing these American treasures in person. A highlight is seeing the East & West Paden Bridges, known as "The Twin Bridges" for their conjoined spans. The Twins are one of only two sets of such bridges in the country. The oldest covered bridge in the counties, the Wanich Bridge, dates to 1844. Of the 25 bridges, 17 still allow for vehicular traffic. Five of the bridges that are closed have picnic tables on them to allow for a relaxing lunch visit. Each season brings a new view of the bridges, so travelers may elect to see them at any point throughout the year. To help guide your visit, a free printed driving tour map of the bridges can be requested from the Visitors Bureau's website.

As one of the most iconic sights in the Central Pennsylvania countryside, covered bridges are a reminder of simpler times of days gone by. Pennsylvania has nearly 200 covered bridges still standing – the most in the United States. Covered bridges were created for a variety of reasons, but most related to the longevity of the bridge. Simply put, building a roof over the bridge would lengthen its lifespan by slowing the impact of wear and tear from weather and wood rot.

Manley Robbins Trail at the Hess Recreation Area in Danville is the oldest known rail-to-trail in the United States and provides a scenic walk or bike. In the southern part of Columbia County, Weiser State Forest – Roaring Creek Tract offers the area’s largest trail system, including an eight mile shared use trail that is ideal for families out for a casual weekend jaunt. Weiser is also home to four historic miner trails from the 19th century that were restored in the early 2000’s to allow for present-day explorers to “walk in the footsteps” of miners from days past. In total, there are approximately 40 miles of shared use trails for hiking, mountain biking, and cross-country skiing at the Roaring Creek Tract. Further east at the Susquehanna Riverlands near Berwick, hikers and bicyclists can traverse the 12.5 mile Susquehanna Warrior Trail that retraces an old Native American footpath along the mighty Susquehanna River. Twister, 1999 Opened in 1999, the Twister “goes through swooping curves, a double helix, a dark tunnel and down several small and large hills for a surprisingly forceful and gripping experience!”

Entrance Billboard The original entrance took guests straight through the park. In 1997, a new entrance was created with highway access and a stoplight at the lower end of the park.

Motor Boats, 1955 Guests have been steering their boats – and occasionally getting stuck crosswise – through Knoebels’ boat ride since 1955.

Dodgems, 1947 A historical marker at Knoebels reads, “The Dodgems were purchased by Lawrence Knoebel in 1947 and are considered to be the best bumper car ride in America today. Over the years the original cars have been replaced with Lusse SKOOTER cars while the Driving arena has been expanded.”

Skating Rink Operating from 1932 to 1985, Knoebels Skating Rink was a place for skaters from beginners to daredevils, and even some romantic gliders.

live music. Lauren Muscato, 4th-generation family member, noted that they’ve had many talented musicians and entertainers on the Hawaiian Bandshell stage, although it’s not primarily known as a “launch pad” for major national acts. Magazine publisher Malcolm Forbes and actress Elizabeth Taylor “graced the Grove” in 1988, when Forbes led a group of motorcyclists from New Jersey to Knoebels Amusement Resort to raise money for the Muscular Dystrophy Association’s Ride for Life. Taylor Swift performed there twice in 2002, when her singing career was just kicking off. A video clip of one of the performances was shown in her “Miss Americana” documentary, in a Grammy Museum display, and most recently in an ad for her 6-episode docuseries. “There’s also the same clip, and her dad talks about ‘Knoebels Grove,’ in ‘Journey to Fearless,’ which was a documentary about The Fearless Tour,” Muscato said. Part of the fun of going to Knoebels with your family is learning to orient yourself in the park. Luckily, some beloved landmarks make that easy even for kids. One of the first buildings people come upon is the Alamo restaurant. With its adobe-style walls and painted cactus signs, it adds a zany Western touch to the site. Rick Knoebel, 4th-generation family member, pointed out that the Alamo has become a beloved, award-winning part of the park. “It’s a place for families to gather, sit down, and enjoy a hearty meal together. Don’t miss out on our famous Pennsylvania Dutch chicken and waffles.” Likewise, the Birthday Cake Pavilion, built in 1957 and located near the Grand Carousel, looks like a huge, magical cake. “Uniquely positioned within the park and topped with enormous candles, this pavilion became a beloved landmark and remains as such today,” Brian Knoebel, Knoebels’ President, said. “In addition to this pavilion, our free pavilion space near the main parking lot welcomes thousands of guests for family reunions, company picnics, birthday parties and other celebrations.” Probably one of the first rides for all children is either the Pioneer Train or Ole Smokey. It would be interesting to know how many families have photos of parents or grandparents holding babies or toddlers on their lap as the trains whistle their way out of the station. Dick Knoebel recalled that Knoebels Grove started with a train called the Nickle Plate that ran through the park. When the Pioneer Train debuted in 1960, it “fulfilled Henry

Like the clankety-clank of the Phoenix roller coaster climbing up the rails to its first big drop, Knoebels Amusement Resort in Elysburg has climbed steadily over the years to create a destination where people laugh and scream – sometimes at the same time – and make happy memories. This year the park is celebrating its 100th birthday. The Crystal Pool, where generations of swimmers have jumped off diving boards, practiced their backstroke, and splashed their siblings, has been a part of the Knoebels experience since its start on July 4, 1926. Over the decades they’ve added waterslides and a kiddie splash area, updated the filtration system and other amenities, but the pool’s location and size remain largely the same. “So, while what you see today may not be the original concrete, it’s very much the legacy pool renewed and maintained, but still very important to what became Knoebels,” Richard “Dick” Knoebel, President Emeritus of Knoebels said. According to Stacy Yutko, Knoebels’ Public Relations Director, the park began in 1926 as a grove with a pool, carousel, and simple concessions. As it grew to include a large variety of rides and attractions, games, shopping, entertainment, a campground, picnic grounds, and more, it took on the new name of Knoebels Amusement Resort, acknowledging it as a full-fledged destination. Today, the resort also includes Lake Glory Campground, Three Ponds Golf Course, and Nickle Plate Bar & Grill. One thing that hasn’t changed: its budget-friendly goal. “We are America’s largest free-admission amusement park and offer free parking, entertainment, and picnic facilities,” Yutko said. “We often hear from our guests that this flexibility, without the big upfront cost, allows us to be a tradition for the entire family, including those who prefer a seat on a park bench instead of the Phoenix roller coaster!” Amazingly, attractions built generations ago continue to appeal to Knoebels guests. People can’t miss the traditional band organs of the Grand Carousel cranking out merry tunes as it spins round and round with 63 hand-carved horses, some “jumping” up and down, and some standing firm on the carousel floor. Purchased 85 years ago, it is a legendary Golden Ticket Award winner that allows daring riders to stretch out their arms for a chance to snag the nostalgic brass-ring. “It is one of two historic carousels, the second one being the S & G Carousel in our kiddie area,” Dick Knoebel said. The Hawaiian Bandshell opened six years later, in 1947, giving guests a chance to take a break from rides like the Power Surge and the StratosFear while they kick back to enjoy

Ferris Wheel, 1994 In 1994, Knoebels opened the Giant Wheel gondola ride, giving guests a view of the park from 110 feet in the air.

Knoebels’ dream to operate a train into the woods outside of the park.” The third and “youngest” train, Ole Smokey, joined the ride lineup late in the 1960s and replaced Nickle Plate. “One aspect that makes Ole Smokey unique is that it’s a miniature steam train powered by anthracite coal,” Dick Knoebel said. “And while the engine was new, the cars from Nickle Plate were used and continue to be used today.” Guests pass under the Twister roller coaster, and chug through the peaceful woods beyond the park. Glimpsing deer or squirrels along the way is a definite possibility. “It’s also one of the Knoebels rides that truly spans generations from grandparents to parents and young children to even the family pet,” Dick Knoebel said. “That ability to bring the entire family on board is a big part of what has made the Pioneer Train a beloved Knoebels favorite for decades.” Another unique Knoebels feature: the campground, which opened in 1963 with nine campsites and now offers more than 600. Guests can opt for the Park Campground, just steps away from the park – the Twister roller coaster is the only alarm clock you’ll need each morning. For a more scenic experience, go for the Lake Glory Campground just a few miles down the road. “Just like the park itself, we are lucky to have many legacy families with multiple generations return year after year, many rebooking before they even check out,” Brian Knoebel commented. “While availability can be hard to come by during our summer weekends, we recommend checking our weekday availability. Weekdays are a wonderful time to visit the park, too!” Sometimes people just need a little eerie shiver in the middle of a hot, summer day. Knoebels’ Haunted Mansion, opened in 1973, is happy to oblige. “It’s wonderful to see something built in-house over fifty years ago continue to thrill over generations, while receiving continued recognition from organizations such as Dark Attraction & Funhouse Enthusiasts (DAFE),” Brian Knoebel said. “For me and many team members, those awards serve as a reminder that heart, creativity, teamwork and commitment matter.” Operating an amusement park for 100 years comes with challenges. With creeks running through the park, Knoebels has faced sometimes devastating floods. “Most of the time the creeks are our best friends. Our guests love the natural beauty of the park, and the two creeks that flow through it are an important part of that. Every once in a while, however, they become our worst enemy,” Brian Knoebel acknowledged.

After major floods such as Agnes in 1972, and especially the 2006 flood, 90 percent of the park was under water. The Knoebels team has always rallied to repair and reopen as quickly as possible, Brian Knoebel said, adding, “There is a kind of resilience born from those hardships.” He appreciates “the positives,” like the team persisting to rebuild, and loyal fans offering to help then showing their support by coming out in droves once the park reopened. Joy Through the Grove was also a response to a challenge. The Christmas drive-through light display launched in 2020, helping to brighten the holiday spirit after COVID had shut down many businesses and events. “It’s been wonderful to witness Joy Through the Grove become a tradition for so many. It’s an event the entire family can enjoy … including the family pet,” Brian Knoebel said. “Guests visiting select Thursdays through Sundays can enjoy some extra holiday fun at Knoebels’ Christmas Village at Three Ponds Golf Course: snap photos with Santa, feast on grab-and-go food items and shop for the Knoebels fan on your list, all while enjoying outdoor Christmas displays, a fire pit and s’mores.” Knoebels holds a place in the hearts of locals and out-of-state visitors alike. So many of us have childhood/teenage memories of the park, whether from specific rides that we bravely conquered, rolling through the woods on Ole Smokey, or even just seeing the unique buildings like the Alamo, the Hawaiian Bandshell, the stone pillars entrance or the Grand Carousel – Knoebels is a part of our summers. We’ll all enjoy celebrating its 100th birthday. “It will be a season-long celebration that honors our past and looks forward to the future!” Yutko said. “Guests can anticipate special events, exclusive merchandise, and more.” “It’s honestly humbling to think about as we celebrate 100 years as a timeless hometown amusement resort,” Brian Knoebel mused. “Walking through the park each morning as it comes alive, anticipating the excitement, hearing the laughter of children, and smelling the incredible aroma of award- winning food … it never gets old. There’s a real sense of joy in the air, a kind of timeless delight.” He’s mindful of the fact that Knoebels gives families a place to “escape their troubles” and create positive memories. Even during the hectic summer weekends or “those exhausting floods,” the dedication of the Knoebels team and family members, along with the gratitude from guests, makes it all worthwhile. “We know what we’re creating isn’t just a ride or a candy apple,” Brian Knoebel said. “It’s a part of people’s life stories.”
